Build your ceramics knowledge and confidence with our School & Teacher Training Program. Start with the Base Module, covering essential ceramic theory and fundamentals, then choose one Specialist Module to develop your skills in an area that suits your classroom or teaching needs.

 

Ceramics & Glazing 101

This session covers everything you need to know about the ceramics process to enable you to work with clay in the classroom.

Using a combination of instruction and hands-on learning,
our experienced tutors will take you through:

• The ceramic process: clay from bag through to finished piece
• The different types of clay and when it is appropriate to use them
• When and how to apply the major decorating methods (undergalze, glaze and onglaze)
• A range of basic decorating techniques
• How to successfully choose and apply glaze


Kiln 101

• How to operate your kiln for Bisque firing and beyond
• Kiln Safety and Maintenance
• Troubleshooting: How to recognise and fix firing and glazing issues


Handbuilding

• Basic handbuilding methods (pinch, coil, slab and model)
• Troubleshooting: How to recognise and fix handbuilding construction issues


Slip Casting

• Preparing casting slip
• Basic slipcasting
• Troubleshooting: How to recognise and fix slipcasting issues


Wheel Throwing

• Learn the basics of wheel throwing
• Trimming
• Troubleshooting: How to recognise and fix thrown ceramic issues


Decorating

• A variety of ways to apply underglaze
• How to use the resist technique
• Splatter and bubble techniques
• Troubleshooting: How to recognise and fix decoration application issues
