All types of clays must go through a minimum of 2 firings

1st firing

Once your work is completely dry, bring it in for Bisque Firing

This is the first firing for all types of clays. Bisque firings are designed to dry out and harden the clay to create an even surface for decoration and glazing.

2nd firing

Once you have collected your work and decorated it with glazes or other materials, you are ready for Second Firing

This firing is designed to set the glazes and harden the clay to its most solid form.

3rd firing (optional)

After 2nd firing, you may want to apply decorative elements such as lustres, decals, or enamels that require lower firing temperatures in the Third Firing

The purpose of the third firing is to enhance the surface with intricate details, colors, or metallic finishes, giving the piece its final aesthetic appeal. It is commonly used in fine pottery, porcelain, and artistic ceramic works to achieve a sophisticated or specialized look.

Important!!!

For the 2nd firing, you MUST select the type of firing that matches the clay you use. E.g. if you use stoneware clay and glazes, you must select stoneware firing; if you use earthenware clay and glazes, you must select earthenware firing.

If you put the wrong clay into the wrong firing temperature, it can melt damaging the kiln and other people’s work and you will also be liable to pay for any damaged equipment.

How much does pottery firing cost?

Our firing service is pre-paid and charged by weight — $10 per kg, with a minimum charge of $10 per order. Pieces are weighed and charged when you drop them off.

What types of firing do you offer?

We offer four firing types: Bisque Firing (980°C, Cone 07-06), Earthenware Glaze Firing (1070°C, Cone 04-03), Midfire Glaze Firing (1200°C, Cone 5-6), and Stoneware Glaze Firing (1270°C, Cone 9-10).

How many times does my pottery need to be fired?

All clay types require a minimum of 2 firings. The 1st firing (Bisque) hardens and dries the clay to prepare it for glazing. The 2nd firing sets the glaze and hardens the clay to its final, solid form.

Do I need a 3rd firing?

A 3rd firing is optional and only needed if you're applying decorative elements like lustres, decals, or enamels, which require lower firing temperatures. It's commonly used for fine pottery, porcelain, and artistic ceramic pieces to achieve a more detailed or specialised finish.

What happens if I choose the wrong firing type for my clay?

It's essential to match your 2nd firing selection to your clay and glaze type — for example, stoneware clay must be fired at stoneware temperatures, and earthenware clay at earthenware temperatures. Using the wrong firing temperature can melt your piece and damage the kiln and other customers' work, and you may be held liable for any equipment damage.
