Frequently asked questions

What is a front loading kiln?

A front loading kiln opens from the front like a cabinet, allowing pottery to be loaded and unloaded at chest height without bending or lifting over the sides. This makes them easier to use for large or heavy pieces and frequent firing.

What's the benefit of a front loading kiln over a top loading kiln?

Front loading kilns offer easier ergonomic access, more even heat distribution with multi-side heating elements, and are generally better suited to larger studios, schools, and frequent commercial use compared to top loading kilns.

What does "2-side," "3-side," or "5-side heating" mean?

This refers to how many interior walls of the kiln contain heating elements. More heating sides generally provide more even, consistent temperature distribution throughout the kiln chamber, which is especially important for larger kilns and precise glaze firing.

What size front loading kiln do I need for a school or studio?

For schools and community studios firing in volume, a mid-to-large kiln (100+ litres, 3-5 side heating) is typically recommended. Smaller studios or teaching spaces with lighter firing loads may suit a compact 2-side heating model.

Do front loading kilns come with a drawer option?

Yes, select Nabertherm front loading models are available with a drawer (NW series), which can make loading certain types of work more convenient depending on your studio workflow.
