Learn basic hand building techniques in order to make a vessel for your favourite flora.
Join our current Guest Artist in Residence Lucinda Florence, in a one-day handbuilding workshop. In this workshop participants will learn the basic principles of hand-building that Florence uses in her practice. Coiling, pinch pot construction and small-scale slab rolling will be demonstrated and students will have the option of making 2-3 small-scale pieces using these techniques.
Recent research Florence has undertaken into historic methods of floral display have influenced her work and will act as a starting point to inform the pieces students will produce, with an emphasis on clipping pots, floral frogs and posy holders. Students are encouraged to come to class with concepts and flowers or plants to guide them; however Florence will discuss her practice as both a florist and ceramicist to inspire ideas among participants.
Students will use stoneware clay and finished pieces will be glazed and fired by Northcote Pottery Supplies technicians. Work will take approximately 2-3 weeks to be fired and students will be notified when work is ready for collection
This workshop is ideal for beginners and those with some experience with clay. Flower lovers are greatly encouraged to attend.
Please wear covered shoes and bring an apron if you wish to keep your clothes clean.
