In this six week course you will explore strategies for creating ceramic sculptures: a category defined by the expressive application of techniques like pinching, coiling, slab-building and carving. Students are introduced to methods of creating abstract sculptures informed by principles of formal integrity as well as figurative sculptures informed by exercises in observation. Short lectures will explore abstract expressionist ceramics, space and scale, organic form, the body and the vessel, applications of slip and glaze, and various methods of developing ideas, including the use of drawings and paper templates.
Ultimately, this course aims to cultivate each student’s capacity to work intuitively, discovering original forms and ideas through the process of making. While the first few weeks of the course will be more structured, in later weeks, students are invited to work independently on their own projects with support from the instructor.
Each class will have a maximum of 10 students.
Please bring along your own towel and apron. Covered shoes are essential.
