Learn basic hand building techniques to make a decorative wall hanging
Join our final Guest Artist in Residence for 2018 Emily Hassel, in a one-day hand-building workshop. In this workshop participants will be taught basic slab building and joining techniques to create one to two wall hangings or small decorative objects.
Emily will also demonstrate and discuss the decorating techniques used in her work and students can use under glazes to decorate their own pieces.
Hassel’s practice is an exploration of the themes of chimeras, goddesses and beasts depicted through her highly illustrative decoration. She often returns to the imagery and iconography of tarot, Grecian mythology and astrology.
For this workshop students are encouraged to come to class with concepts; however Emily will discuss her practice and bring visual references to inspire students. If you would like Emily will read your astrological chart to assist in generating meaningful imagery for your piece.
Students will use stoneware clay and a range of underglaze colours to create their designs and finished pieces will be clear glazed and fired by Northcote Pottery Supplies technicians. Work will take approximately two-three weeks to be fired and students will be notified when work is ready for collection.
This workshop is ideal for beginners and those with some experience with clay, illustration or drawing.
Please wear covered shoes and bring an apron if you wish to keep your clothes clean.
