Advanced Wheel Throwing Course

Advanced Wheel Throwing Course

There are no courses scheduled at this time.

Students in this 6 week course will have completed the Intermediate Wheel Throwing course and be ready to develop and refine the discipline required to produce sets / groups of objects. By weighing their clay and measuring all dimensions, students will produce sets of bowls, mugs, cups etc that are similar in style.

The cost of this course includes one bag of clay only (buff stoneware), use of wheel and tools, firing, and materials for decorating and glazing. Our pottery supply shop stocks a wide variety of products you may wish to explore further and is open during business hours. This course will have a maximum of 10 students.

Please bring along your own towel and apron. Covered shoes are essential.

Week 1 - Consider generating a group of objects  that are similar in design. Aim to make  a set of 4-6 bowls, mugs sets that are  the same height, width and made by weighing your clay.

Week 2 - tutor to demonstrate how to make bottle forms. Emphasis on bellowing out the body of the form and collaring it back into a narrow neck. Again aiming to make forms similar  to each other or that would work well as a group, generate a series of bottle shaped forms. Turn last week’s vessels, throw extra work. Students will leant to make their own chuck, specific to their designed form.

Week 3 - Tutor to demonstrate how to turn narrow necked vessels by using a chuck. Continue throwing/ refining these forms.

Week 4 - Continue practicing discipline skills required to generate sets or more complex forms. Turn last week vessels

Week 5 - turn work from last week. Decorate  using underglazes/ tissue transfers or your own style of decoration suited to your individual range. Works ready for bisque.

Week 6 - Glaze all work.

Course work will take approximately 2-3 weeks to fire after class finishes, students have up to month to collect their work.

Please note that 8 week classes are no longer available, this will allow us to present a greater variety of classes in between terms.
